How much does Google Ads cost? A plain guide for Gawler and Barossa businesses.

Google Ads has no set price. You pay per click, an auction sets the price, and you choose the budget. Here is how the cost works, how many people in Gawler search for local businesses each month, and a worked budget you can copy.

Key takeaways

  • Google Ads has no fixed price. You pay when someone clicks, the price of each click comes from an auction, and you set the average daily budget.
  • Google can spend up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day, but no more than 30.4 times it across a month. A $20 daily budget can never cost more than $608 in a month.
  • Some Gawler searches are busy: “cafe gawler” averages about 1,300 searches a month and “plumber gawler” about 590. Trade searches usually cost far more per click than café searches.
  • The real cost is three things: the clicks, the time or fee to run the campaign, and the page people land on. A weak landing page wastes the money spent on clicks.

How much does Google Ads cost? There is no set price. You pay when someone clicks your ad, the price of each click is set in an auction against other businesses bidding on the same search, and you decide roughly how much you’re willing to spend each day. For a business in Gawler or the Barossa, the real cost comes down to three things: the clicks, the time or fee to run the campaign, and the page people land on when they click.

The ASP Build & Co homepage on a desktop screen and a phone, one of the Gawler websites we built.

This guide explains each part in plain terms, using Google’s own help pages, the real number of monthly searches for common Gawler businesses, and a worked budget you can adjust to suit your own figures.

How Google Ads pricing works

Most small business campaigns use cost-per-click bidding, often called pay-per-click. You set the most you’re willing to pay for a click, and Google says you will often be charged less than that, sometimes much less (Google Ads Help: cost per click). If your ad shows and nobody clicks, you don’t pay for that click.

The price of a click depends on who else wants it. When three Gawler electricians all bid on “electrician gawler”, each click costs more than it would if one of them stopped. That is why two businesses in the same street can pay very different amounts. A café competes with a handful of others for cheap clicks. A plumber competes with every plumber, and every Adelaide plumbing company that services Gawler, for clicks that could turn into a big job.

How the daily budget works, and the most you can be charged

You give each campaign an average daily budget. Google treats that as an average across the month, not a hard daily stop. On a busy day a campaign can spend up to twice the daily budget, but across the month you won’t be charged more than 30.4 times it (Google Ads Help: overdelivery and your average daily budget).

In practice that means your monthly ceiling is easy to work out. A $10 daily budget can never cost more than $304 in a month. A $20 daily budget tops out at $608. You can lower it, pause it or switch it off at any time, and the spending stops with it.

How many people in Gawler search for local businesses?

Before you spend anything, check whether people actually search for what you do. These are the average monthly Google searches for each exact phrase over the past year, from Google Ads data in our keyword research tool, checked on 19 October 2026:

Food and everyday services: “cafe gawler” about 1,300 a month, “dentist gawler” about 1,000, “mechanic gawler” about 880 and “hairdresser gawler” about 720.

Trades and home services: “plumber gawler” about 590, “pest control gawler” about 170, “electrician gawler” about 140, “air conditioning gawler” about 70, “landscaping gawler” and “fencing gawler” about 50 each, and “carpet cleaning gawler” about 40.

Professional services: “accountant gawler” about 110 a month.

Those figures only count the exact phrase. People also search “plumber near me”, “blocked drain gawler east” or the name of their suburb, so the real demand is higher. They also show how much the price of a click varies. In the same data, the suggested bid for “plumber gawler” was more than twice the bid for “electrician gawler” and more than a hundred times the bid for “cafe gawler”. A plumbing job is worth far more than a coffee, so plumbers bid more for the click.

You can see the same kind of numbers for your own business in Google’s free Keyword Planner, which shows estimated monthly searches and what it typically costs to show an ad for each search.

A worked budget for a Gawler business

Here is a simple way to set a first budget. The numbers below are an example to show the method, not a quote. Swap in your own figures from Keyword Planner and your own jobs.

Say the searches you want cost around $5 a click, and you set an average daily budget of $20. Your most expensive possible month is $608. At $5 a click, that buys roughly 120 clicks. If one in ten of those people calls or sends an enquiry, that’s about 12 enquiries in the month, at roughly $50 each. Trade searches often cost well over $5 a click, so check your own numbers first: at a higher price the same budget buys fewer clicks.

Then ask the question that decides it: is an enquiry worth $50 to you? For a landscaper quoting a $5,000 backyard, almost certainly. For a business selling a $20 product, probably not, and ads may not be the right first step. Run the sum with your own average job value and how many enquiries usually turn into work. Give a new campaign at least a few weeks before judging it, because Google needs time and data to settle.

What else you pay for: running the campaign and the landing page

The clicks are only part of the cost. Someone has to pick the searches, write the ads, add negative keywords so you don’t pay for searches like “plumber jobs gawler”, and check the results every week. You can do it yourself if you have the time, in which case the budget maths above is your whole ad cost. If you’d rather hand it over, our Google Ads management plans are $399 a month (Starter), $599 (Growth) or $799 (Pro), depending on how many services and towns the campaign covers. That is the total monthly cost: the ad spend is included and we run it for you, so there is nothing extra to pay Google. See what each Google Ads plan includes.

The page people land on matters just as much. Google’s Quality Score diagnostic looks at three things: how likely your ad is to be clicked, how closely it matches the search, and how relevant and useful your landing page is (Google Ads Help: Quality Score). Paying for a click that lands on a slow homepage with no phone button is the most common way small businesses waste ad money. If your site isn’t up to it, start there. Our Gawler web design page shows the kind of sites we build for local businesses, and a focused landing page is often enough for a first campaign.

Only pay for clicks from Gawler and the towns you serve

Google Ads lets you show ads only in chosen places: a town, a postcode area, or a radius of at least 1 km around a location (Google Ads Help: location targeting). For a Gawler business that might be Gawler and the suburbs around it, such as Gawler East, Evanston, Hewett and Willaston, plus Roseworthy, Angle Vale or the Barossa towns if you travel there.

One setting is worth checking. By default, Google can show your ads to people who are in your area or who have shown interest in it. If you only want people who are actually in or around Gawler, choose the “Presence” option in the campaign’s location settings. For a local trade that usually saves money.

Ads, SEO, or both?

Ads work from the day they go live and stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes months to build but keeps bringing people in without a cost per click. For most Gawler trades, the free Google Maps listing brings in a lot of the calls, and our guide to getting found on Google in Gawler covers that side. Ads make the most sense when you need work now, want to test a new service, or sell something worth enough per job to pay for the clicks.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Google Ads cost per month for a small business?

It’s up to you. You set an average daily budget, and Google won’t charge more than 30.4 times that across a month. A $10 daily budget can never cost more than $304 a month, and $20 a day tops out at $608. That is if you run the campaign yourself. If we run it for you, our plans are $399, $599 or $799 a month in total, with the ad spend already included and nothing extra billed by Google. What a click costs depends on your industry and how many competitors are bidding.

Do I pay if people see my ad but don’t click?

Not on cost-per-click bidding, which most small business Search campaigns use. You pay when someone clicks. Google says the amount charged is often less than the maximum you set.

Why do clicks cost so much more for plumbers than for cafés?

Because more businesses bid on the same searches and each job is worth more. In Google Ads data checked on 19 October 2026, the suggested bid for “plumber gawler” was more than twice that for “electrician gawler” and more than a hundred times that for “cafe gawler”.

Can I show my ads only to people in Gawler?

Yes. You can target towns, postcodes or a radius of at least 1 km around a location. Choose the “Presence” setting if you only want people who are in or around those places, rather than anyone showing an interest in them.

Should I do Google Ads or SEO first?

If you need enquiries now, ads are faster. If you can wait a few months, SEO and a complete Google Business Profile keep working without a cost per click. Many local businesses use a small ads budget while their SEO builds.
